Topic Overview

This upper-beginner story combines familiar daily-life vocabulary with past tense and connected actions. Read for the sequence and the reason the day felt enjoyable.

This reading is meant to be studied slowly. First, notice the familiar words and endings. Then read the passage again while checking how the sentences connect. Do not translate every word mechanically; beginner Korean reading improves when you recognize useful chunks such as greetings, time expressions, particles, and polite endings inside a complete situation.

Reading Strategy

Mark every past-tense ending, number the actions, and identify each place marked with 에 or 에서. Summarize the story in three English sentences before checking the translation.

A good reading routine has three passes. On the first pass, read for the general situation. On the second pass, underline vocabulary and grammar you already know. On the third pass, read aloud and compare your understanding with the natural English translation. This method keeps the activity focused on learning Korean rather than simply matching English sentences.

한강 is pronounced with the final ㄴ flowing into 강. In 먹었어요, keep 었어요 connected to the verb stem rather than reading it as a separate word.

Grammar Highlights

Culture Note

Riverside parks along the Han River are common places for cycling, walking, picnics, and meeting friends. Experiences vary by park and season, so this passage describes one ordinary outing rather than a fixed custom.

If the passage feels difficult, reduce the task instead of skipping it. Read only two lines, identify the subject or topic, and find one ending that you recognize. Small successful readings build the foundation for longer Korean texts.

Teacher Notes

For classes, model the full passage once at natural speed, then read it again in shorter chunks. Ask learners to identify known words before asking comprehension questions. This helps beginners feel that reading Korean is a process of noticing patterns, not guessing every word from English.
